The Man At The Wheel

“The Man at the Wheel,” also known as the Gloucester Fisherman's Memorial, is an iconic statue located in Gloucester, Massachusetts. More than just a statue, it's a symbol of Gloucester's enduring connection to the sea and a poignant memorial for the estimated 10,000 fishermen from Gloucester who have lost their lives while carrying out their duties on the ocean. The statue, coupled with Kipling’s evocative poem, invites reflection on the resilience and bravery exhibited by Gloucester’s fishermen throughout history.

Captains Courageous Movie Clip

The movie clip from “Captains Courageous” includes a scene at Duncan Street. During October and November of 1935, several scenes for the movie were filmed in the city of Gloucester. This included the exterior of Our Lady of Good Voyage and the interior of Captain Donald A. MacCuish's home at 5 Lookout Street. Additionally, two Gloucester schooners, the Imperator and the Mary F. Curtis, were featured in scenes filmed from Five Pound Island.

The 1928 Official Account Of The Genesis Of The $20,000 Landmark Commission

The essay originally published in 1928 received a reprint by the Gloucester Chamber of Commerce in Gloucester, MA. In 1959, another reprint was made specifically for the school children of Gloucester by the Information Office of the U.S. Bureau of Commercial Fisheries. Fast forward to 2011, a scanned copy of the 1959 facsimile was made available at the Gloucester Archives located in City Hall, Gloucester, MA, for the purpose of the HarborWalk project.
