Fitz Henry Lane (1804-1865) designed this house in 1847, incorporating a studio on the top floor that provided a breathtaking panoramic view for his renowned Gloucester veduta paintings. The studio was open to the public, garnering media coverage on his progress and individual works, akin to serialized novels in newspapers of that era. Lane's active involvement in the community, including his role as Director of the Lyceum, and the widespread acclaim for his work served as catalysts, attracting artists and art enthusiasts to Cape Ann.

In February 2016, the Cape Ann Museum launched a groundbreaking online ‘Catalogue Raisonne' dedicated to Fitz Henry Lane, encompassing various components such as a catalog of Lane's artworks, historical information, images, and materials related to his subjects, scholarly essays, and a bibliography and archive of publications. The website features easily clickable links that connect the rich historical material to the relevant paintings, with a collection of 319 works currently available, including all known Lane pictures in public collections.

Gloucester's iconic sculpture, a larger-than-life bronze statue by Alfred Duca, pays homage to the artists of the region, including Fitz Henry Lane. Presented as a gift to the people of Gloucester, the sculpture captures an artist at work, drawing inspiration from the sea. Positioned on a promontory at Lane's historic house, the statue, dedicated in 1997, invites visitors to interact and contemplate, with Duca's sandals casting an additional layer of meaning and tribute.
