Born in Gloucester in 1818, Samuel Sawyer grew up amidst the town's bustling maritime activity. However, he saw the potential for growth beyond the traditional fishing and seafaring industries. Recognizing the need to diversify Gloucester's economy, Sawyer set out on a path to develop new industries that would create jobs and drive economic prosperity. One of Sawyer's most significant contributions was the establishment of a thriving granite quarrying and cutting industry in Gloucester.
